His daughter Gwendolen asked him to make a house for the little fairies she had seen in the garden. She was convinced they lived in holes in the ground. They deserved a fine house to live in instead. It took 15 years to complete. The Palace contains more than 3,000 components, many of which are small treasures collected from around the world.

George has visited Råbjerg Mile together with Søren. Råbjerg Mile is a migrating coastal dune between Skagen and Frederikshavn. The wind moves the dune in a north-easterly direction up to 18 m a year.
20120813-193403.jpg
Råbjerg Mile is the largest moving dune in Northern Europe with an area of around 1 km² (0.4 mi²) and a height of 40 m (130 ft). The dune contains a total of 4 million m³ of sand. George almost got lost in all that sand.

The bronze bear and bull sculpture outside the Borick Business Building represents an iconic symbol in the business world. George was caught right between the bear and the bull. A bull market is associated with increasing investor confidence and a bear market is a general decline in the stock market...
20120811-222530.jpg
Unfortunately George ended up in the bear's mouth. He survived and that must a good sign.

According to the legend, when Numitor, grandfather of the twins Romulus and Remus, was overthrown by his brother Amulius, the usurper ordered the twins to be cast into the Tiber River. They were rescued by a she-wolf who cared for them until a herdsman, Faustulus, found and raised them.

Hillerød, Denmark, July 2012

George has visited the garden at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød together with Madeline, Sigfus and Trond.

From the castle, the king had a perfect view of his garden where everything was organised according to the strict rules of symmetry. It was a picture of his absolute power. The plants were cut into shapes and formed his monogram on the parterre. Here George is at a scale model 1:100 of the garden.

Today the Frederiksborg Castle Gardens consist of two very different historic garden grounds - the romantic landscaped garden from the 19th century and the recreated Baroque garden. In the late 18th century the old Baroque garden fell into decay but it was recreated from 1994 to 1996. King Frederik IV's architect and landscape gardener Johan Cornelius Krieger's plans were used in recreating the garden. George saw the many statues in the garden.

- and the many fountains.

George went in to the city of Hillerød, from where he could see the castle across the lake.

Faroe Islands, July 2012

George has visited the Faroe Islands with Josefine and Alexander. They visited the capital Tórshavn, where they saw the the Tinganes peninsula. Here the Vikings established their parliament in 850 CE, thus Tórshavn was made capital of Faroe Islands and has remained so ever since.

The ruins of the Magnus Cathedral (appointed as World Heritage Site) from about 1300. The oldest still used church of the Faroes, Saint Olav's Church from 12th century. And one of the oldest still inhabited wooden house of the world, Kirkjubøargarður from 11th century.

Kirkjubøargarður (Yard of Kirkjubøur) is also known as King's Farm has always been the largest in the country. Roykstovan, the oldest part dating back to around year 1000. The entrance was destroyed in 1833, but was replaced by a true to original copy in 1907. On the top is the Norwegian Lion, indicating that the Faroes were a Norwegian colony after the Viking age. This is George knocking on that door... The 17th generation of the Patursson Family, which has occupied it since 1550, is still living here. The current Patursson is the famous Faroese painter, sculptor, and glass artist Tróndur Patursson. He was born in this house.

The view from Kirkjubøur is fantastic overlooking the islands Hestur and Koltur.

- and another view from the west coast of Streymoy.

On Streymoy George headed north to Saksun. Saksun village has a population of 34 and has a Church and a Museum. The Church was originally built in Tjørnuvík, but in 1858 it was disassembled, carried over the mountains and reassembled in Saksun.

Saksun lies in the bottom of what used to be an inlet of the sea, surrounded by high mountains. The inlet formed a good deep natural harbour, until a storm blocked the inlet with sand. This made the old harbour become a unaccesible seawater lagoon only accessible by small boats on high tide.

George also went to Kunoy. Kunoy means Woman Island and the island has two settlements. The church is in the village of Kunoy, which has a population of 64.

20120721-235540.jpg

(The National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II) or Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) or "Il Vittoriano" is a monument built to honour Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. First he was stabbed...

The monument holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame, built under the statue of Italy after World War I. The body of the unknown soldier was chosen on 26 October 1921 from among 11 unknown remains by Maria Bergamas, a woman from Gradisca d'Isonzo whose only child was killed during World War I. Her son's body was never recovered. The selected unknown was transferred from Aquileia, where the ceremony with Bergamas had taken place to Rome and buried in a state funeral on 4 November 1921. Then he was eaten alive...

George enjoyed his lunch at a restaurant on Piazza Navona, one of the main urban spaces in the historic centre of Rome. The restaurant was right in front of Sant'Agnese in Agone, which is a 17th century Baroque church. The name of the church is unrelated to the ‘agony’ of the martyr: in agone was the ancient name of Piazza Navona (piazza in agone), and meant instead, from the Greek, ‘in the site of the competitions’, because Piazza Navona was built on the form of an ancient Roman stadium on the Greek model, and was used for footraces.

North Jutland, Denmark July 2012

George has visited the northern tip of Jutland in Denmark. On the beach near Løkken there are several bunkers from World War II. During World War II the Germans were building 7,500 bunkers in Denmark. It is the largest construction work ever to be carried out in Denmark, and the bunkers can still be seen on the beach. 6,000 of the bunkers were on the west coast of Jutland and were part of the Atlantic Wall stretching from the border between Spain and France in the south to Nordkapp in the far north.

It was installed at the square in 1836 after being offered by the Viceroy of Egypt to Louis Philippe I in 1831. It is a 23 meters (75 ft) tall monolith in pink granite and weighs approximately 230 tons.
